Toney Douglas being second shouldn't be such a surprise...(Personal bias, I think he should have won the award)
Defensive Player of the Year. Led his team to a 4th seed in the ACC and:
Toney Played 1122 minutes to Ty’s 883
Toney had the ball on 27% of possible possessions to Ty’s 22
Toney scored 20.8 ppg to Ty’s 15.9 for the season. In ACC play the difference is even larger: Toney had 23.1 points to Ty’s 16.2
They say that Ty shot 46% from three…he only took 90 shots, compared to Toney shooting a nice 37% while taking 195. Toney made 73 3-pointers almost as many as Ty took.
Sure…Ty had an eFG% of 61 to Toney’s 50….but Toney took almost 200 more shots than Ty. FSU completely relied on Toney. UNC had plenty of other scorers.
Toney had 126 rebounds to Ty’s 83, which is 2.8 vs 4.1 rpg. Not much…but these are two guards.
Ty definitely led the way with assists with 6.5 per game compared to Toney’s 3.
They each had about 2 steals per game
Toney had 15 total blocks to his 4.
Ty had fewer turnovers 59 to Toney’s 74…but that equates to a difference of 2.0 to 2.4 tpg. Toney’s TO% was actually less.
Ty’s tempo free stats may be higher, specifically his eFG% (by a lot) and his Offensive Rating (not so much)
I would love to say that Toney dominated Ty in the UNC game…but Ty went for 21 points, 8-9 from the FT line, had 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 0 steals.
But what did Toney do in that game:
32 point, 13-14 from the FT line. 2-3 from 3 point land. 2 rebounds. 1 assist. 2 steals and 4 turnovers.
We have a nice discussion going on over at Tomahawk Nation (An SBNation blog) if you’re interested in more thoughts on the matter. Always enjoy reading your blog.
Don’t get me wrong, Ty Lawson is an outstanding basketball player and he deserves the credit, but Toney being second shouldn’t be such a surprise.
Cheers,
TC
