Is it just us, or does UC Irvine bring the most heat when it comes to kicking off their college basketball season? The Anteaters, who have never played an NCAA Tournament game and have never even advanced to the finals of the Big West conference tournament, put together (on paper) one of the best Midnight Madness events I've ever encountered. It's called Shocktober 2010, and it appears to be nothing short of effing awesome.
Complete with FREE tacos, FREE fun photo station and FREE stuff, UCI hosted a FREE concert nearly every college kid would be interested in seeing live. Headlined by Kevin Rudolf (so hot right now; was signed by Lil Wayne) and the Cali Swag District (by now, even your grandmother has been taught how to dougie), Shocktober was a wild party that no Kentucky, North Carolina or Florida could even think to replicate. Friday's event began as an outdoor festival with free food and drink, before everyone was moved indoors for a slam dunk competition and other basketball stuff, followed by a performance by Rudolf and Cali Swag. The event culmunated back outdoors with a late night outdoor dance party – "Aftershock" -- with DJ Miles, where glow sticks were distributed for everyone in attendance.
Does anyone have any X?
It's great when a school just owns it and sanctions an event college kids can actually get their kicks to. This was the fifth annual Shocktober, with previous musical guests including Gym Class Heroes and Lupe Fiasco. Clearly, we have been spending too much time marveling on the engrossing Tom Izzo dressing up as a Spartan. Why isn't ESPN sending a correspondent to Irvine? Something tells me Digger Phelps couldn't hang with this young and rambunctious crowd.
