College Basketball Player of the Year Rankings: Week 11
Josh Pastner's Memphis Tigers entered the year with heavy expectations. To some, a trip to the Final Four was well-within reach (heck, maybe it still is). But things sputtered early and often for Pastner's bunch in November and December, and the Tigers managed to drop all five of their most important non-conference games. As a direct result, Memphis slowly faded away from the national spotlight and closer to mediocrity.
But over the last month, as the Tigers have continued to right the ship, sophomore Will Barton has been turning heads with numbers that a 6'6" guard probably shouldn't be putting up. Currently Conference USA's leader in scoring (18.2/gm), Barton is also fifth in rebounding (9.0), third in steals (1.7), third in free throw attempts (101) and second in ORating (113.5) in the league, and has been on an absolute tear since his 28-point, 16-rebound performance against Louisville back on December 22nd.
Barton still has a long way to go if he plans on unseating more established guys ahead of him in these rankings, but the talent, and the numbers, are both undeniable at this point. Rarely, if ever, can a team expect its 6-foot-6 scoring guard to dominate on the glass every single night like clockwork. So when Memphis' stock starts to heat up around the end of February, don't be surprised if Barton's numbers are right in line with some of his more popular peers.
