This sort of bothers me, but by no means am I surprised. Everything is a slight at Big Blue Nation, and their skin is thin. Someone needs to photoshop Davis, and Coach K into the movie poster for Conspiracy Theory.
Interesting blog entry from the UK head coach. After receiving a fair share of criticism from fans and media members following the cancellation of the annual game against Indiana, John Calipari does a great job of acting as his own PR guy, selling the experience of great non-conference games. We're all mad at Cal for being 50 percent responsible for severing ties with neighboring Indiana, but there's plenty of great games in great locations for Kentucky and college basketball fans to look forward to, including a potential neutral-site series with Duke.
The New York Times' Pete Thamel broke it, and SB Nation has created a story stream on the matter. What does that mean? It means this story is by no means "at a resolution". There is at least another layer or two to this.
So Hubert Davis is going to be a coach? This immediately makes the Heels the favorites to lead the country in laughing next season.
I'm not saying these sorts of stories get overlooked by the media, but they certainly could get more attention. Between this from Ryan and what Phil Martelli did to Todd O'Brien last December shows just how big of an ego some elite college coaches have. I understand blocking a player's transfer to particular schools because of geography or league affiliation. It's analogous to businesses implementing a non-compete clause in an employee's contract. You want to protect your investment and not let one of our own flourish with a direct competitor. But for Ryan to go out of his way to prevent Uthoff from even engaging in preliminary discussions with ACC schools and Iowa State is just flat out mean, and it would be nice if Ryan or the University of Wisconsin issue a statement on the matter.
It's easy to throw this type of story around on a message board, sure. But if Shabazz Muhammad does commit to UCLA, a few UK fans who called BS on DoctorBarry44's story will have some crow to eat by the end of the week.
The talent level of prep basketball north of the border has really improved in the past 10-15 years. Now, the country might have produced it's first can't-miss precocious star. Meet Andrew Wiggins, who may be the one to force scouting services and recruitniks to rename all those top 100 lists to "In North America" and not just "In the Country". He's only a sophomore, but the sky appears to be the limit for this kid.
Criticize him all you want, Jared Sullinger is going to the Final Four, and that's why he came back to Columbus.
